The A-88MKII is an 88-key MIDI controller built around Roland's PHA-4 Standard keyboard with escapement and ivory feel. It uses wood construction, and key sensitivity can be adjusted to suit the player. A pitch/mod lever, eight assignable RGB-lit knobs, eight assignable RGB-lit pads and two assignable buttons handle hands-on control.
The keyboard can be divided into three zones (Lower, Upper1, Upper2) for layering and splitting sounds. Onboard tools include an arpeggiator and chord memory, and the pads can trigger commands and events. Eight user memories hold setups, and a Snap Shot function recalls them instantly. System software version 2.00 and later adds MIDI 2.0 support.
Connection is by class-compliant USB-C, which also supplies bus power, with Windows, macOS, iOS and iPadOS. Five-pin MIDI IN and OUT, a damper pedal jack and two assignable pedal jacks are provided. A control app for macOS and Windows is used to edit layers, mappings and pad colours. The case is thin and shallow with flat surfaces and squared edges for fitting beside other gear or into a desk.
