The KRONOS combines nine distinct synthesis engines, including an enhanced SGX-2 grand piano engine, with a sequencer, sampler and effects section. Sounds can be played in Program, Combination and Sequencer modes, and the system keeps the outgoing sound and effects running when switching programs or modes.
Operation centres on an eight-inch 800 x 600 colour TouchView display with touch-and-drag control. Set List mode offers 16 colour-coded slots with performance notes and a nine-band graphic EQ. KARMA algorithmic phrase generation, Drum Tracks and the Open Sampling System support composition and sampling. The sequencer provides 16 MIDI and 16 audio tracks, and 16 onboard effect processors include per-timbre three-band EQ.
The control surface has sliders, knobs, a four-way joystick, a ribbon controller, a vector joystick, and damper, footpedal and footswitch inputs. Class-compliant USB-MIDI controllers connect to the USB host ports, and samples load from USB memory or over a USB Ethernet adapter. The 88- and 73-key models use RH3 weighted hammer action; the 61-key model has a semi-weighted action.
